Men are afraid of women is the view of that high priestess of culture, Lady Gaga, whose new film House Of Gucci is in cinemas next week.

‘They don’t know how to understand them,’ she said shaking her head.

‘We actually undergo a life trauma when we give birth. Men don’t,’ she added firmly.

‘And that’s something we understand about life that’s just different.

‘I don’t think it makes women better than men. I don’t think it makes men better then women,’ but she believes that women, though not all women, ‘live in a culture of feelings and I think not all men understand the culture of feelings’.

Men are afraid of women is the view of that high priestess of culture, Lady Gaga, whose new film House Of Gucci is in cinemas next week. ‘They don’t know how to understand them,’ she said shaking her head

For instance, she explained, ‘Italian men, behind closed doors, they’re slitting each other’s throats over money, but when they meet at weddings, funerals and baptisms they’re hugging and kissing.

‘But they’re afraid of women,’ she sighed.

Well, I have nothing to fear from Lady Gaga when we meet. She’s friendly and looks me straight in the eye.

‘Connected’ she said. ‘I feel connected to you.’

But we’ve only just met, though we have been introduced two or three times in the past.

What made us click, it seems, is that I share her views on animal instinct.

What made us click, it seems, is that I share her views on animal instinct. The kind she displays in her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s latest film about the Gucci family

The kind she displays in her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s latest film about the Gucci family, where Gaga is the ex-wife of Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver.

In 1995 he was gunned down by a hitman on the steps of his residence in Milan.

Three years later Patrizia was convicted of hiring the gunman. She spent 18 years behind bars.

House Of Gucci is Gaga’s second film, following her debut A Star Is Born, in 2018, which garnered her a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

She didn’t win that, but scooped the Academy Award for best song, Shallow.

Gucci was filmed in Italy during lockdown. With nothing to do but work, she stayed in character throughout the shoot.

‘I went straight from set to my hotel room, studied my script some more, went to bed for four hours and was back in the trailer at 3am. I stayed with her the whole time. I believe there’s a discipline to passion.’

Her animal passion is evident on the big screen. It dominates it.

‘We lived that film,’ she said ‘Nothing in that film is a fake.’

She added: ‘I’m not a fake. I may wear fake eyelashes and fake hair sometimes, but I’m not a fake. I’m authentically me.

‘But you know what?’ she added, ‘that doesn’t make me better than anyone else.’

By sheer force of will, Gaga becomes Patrizia.

It’s not so much the physical transformation that hooks you, it’s more that Gaga gives off this voluptuous, animalistic heat when she’s Reggiani.

Gaga liked that and said she studied a house cat, a fox and a panther to prepare for the role. ‘She’s in survival mode this whole movie but in different ways,’ she said.

But for herself, her animal is ‘a whale’. She’s 5 ft 2 in without stiletto heels, so how does she figure herself a whale, I wondered.

‘I think I’m a whale because whales have very big hearts. But even if they want to be small, they can’t.

‘I long to be small all the time but I think it’s just impossible, so I think I’m a whale.

Gaga said that she built the character of Patrizia ‘like an animal’ because she saw something behind her eyes ‘that was looking for an entry point to make a better life’

Gaga said that she felt Patrizia was traumatised throughout her life. ‘What does it mean to grow up in a class that, no matter how hard you try, the system still oppresses you and you just can’t make better of yourself’

Gaga said that she built the character of Patrizia ‘like an animal’ because she saw something behind her eyes ‘that was looking for an entry point to make a better life’.

Her voice rising, she said she resented ‘this idea that to make a better life means a woman is a gold digger.

‘She was not a gold digger,’ she thundered.

‘She just wanted a better life for herself and wanted him [Maurizio] to want what was in front of him,’ she told me.

Shrugging her shoulders, she said that ‘men push women out all the time and it’s because it’s simply easier to not deal with us, and I think that’s what privilege is, and that’s what patriarchy is’.

The thing that pushed Maurizio away was that he couldn’t control her, she said.
