Preparations for the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity continued on Thursday as aerial images showed new areas of the camp in Gwrych Castle, north Wales, being built.

The Grade I listed 19th-century country house, located near Abergele in picturesque Conwy County will play host to the long-running ITV show for the second consecutive year due to travel restrictions surrounding its usual home on Australia’s east coast, currently in the midst of another lockdown.

Yet while the castle is set to host a slew of celebrities when the show returns in November, the focus for this year’s series seemed to be on the sprawling production area, with various marquees and hidden areas being constructed for the crew on this year’s show.

The vast new area for the behind-the-scenes team swamps the layout of last year’s camp – with rows of marquees that will play host to the family of the campmates when they visit the site – and a catering tent.

New pictures showed the builders hard at work as they transformed the crumbling fortress ready for the celebrity inhabitants for the upcoming series in November, with a new additions featuring an extra room, entrance and staircase, while a large black box structured is pictured on the grounds.

Wooden structures are being erected in the courtyard near the campsite where the famous campmates usually congregate, with a separate room seemingly being constructed.

It’s not known whether the space a backdrop for tasks or a brand new camp area.

Meanwhile, a replica of the derelict castle’s entrance is being constructed to the right of this new room, with an archway clearly visible in the shots.

Builders are pictured working hard in the courtyard as they transformed the area ready for the famous faces to move in this winter.

As well as the new structures which form the main changes in the camp, wooden panels are seen surrounding the well where the celebrities collect their water.

While a collection of wood and other building materials lie beside the campers’ dunny (toilet), which so far remains untouched ahead of the series.

Black tarpaulin covers up other areas of the courtyard as preparations for the new show plough steadily on.

In further preparations for the upcoming series, once again hosted by Ant and Dec, a new staircase has been built in the centre of the medieval style castle, seemingly to give easier and quicker access to other parts of the abode.

Elsewhere, a whole new enclosure can be seen constructed behind the main entrance to Gwrych Castle, making way for a large courtyard area.

Changes: Preparations for the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity continued with a new wall and entrance built

The enormous gazebo is thought to house the staff canteen and the show’s production units.

Throughout the sprawling 236 acre estate, various vehicles are seen piled high with scaffolding and other building equipment as builders readied the ancient castle to be fit for the celebrity contestants and the numerous castle trials they’ll face.

MailOnline have contacted I’m A Celebrity representatives, who declined to comment.

Stars thought to be setting foot in the castle amid its second consecutive year of hosting the series include Love Island favourite Liberty Poole, former EastEnders actor Jake Wood, choreographer Arlene Phillips and ex-BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin.

ITV bosses are facing a scramble against time to renovate the dilapidated building – which is now closed to the public – and its surrounding areas ahead of the new series expected to begin in November.

The reality show, which usually films in the Australian wilderness, was forced to relocate to the dilapidated castle following fears Australia could shut its borders because of the ongoing pandemic.

ITV producers have since filed an extensive planning application to the authorities in order to make the country house inhabitable in time for the new series.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that I’m A Celebrity bosses are already in talks to secure Gwrych Castle for a third year running due to fears of the coronavirus plunging the hit series into doubt.

Preparation: The aerial images show a hum of activity in and surrounding the castle as the team rush to transform the place into a medieval campsite for this year’s celeb campers

Despite hopes that this year’s instalment would see the contestants taking to the much-loved Aussie jungle, bosses were forced to abort plans yet again.

Now, it seems the country’s lockdown hell may force fans to accept a third year of fun-and-games from the wintery Welsh set.

A TV insider told The Sun: ‘This time last year, the prospect of I’m A Celebrity not returning to Australia and having to return to the castle seemed slim.

‘Now the show is going back to Gwrych after ITV had the foresight to reserve is for a second series – and they want to make sure they’re equally prepared for the worst in 2022.

Back then: Last year’s series – won by Giovanna Fletcher (pictured in 2020) in the backdrop of the country’s Gwrych Castle – was a roaring success despite its move from the jungle amid restrictions in place from the coronavirus pandemic

‘Going back to Oz is still the goal. But this is about bosses taking every step possible to ensure Britain’s favourite TV show stays on our screens. So they’re likely to approach the castle owners imminently.’

Formerly the country retreat of aristocrat Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, the castle was saved from disrepair by Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust in 2018.

The castle is said to be haunted by the Countess of Dundonald who owned the building until her death in 1926.

Known as The Woman in White, she is said to have been angry at her husband for stripping the castle of valuables and selling them. A ghostly white figure has been seen at the windows.

The last series of I’m A Celeb, won by Giovanna Fletcher, 35, was a ratings hit as it got 14.3 million viewers. It ended up being the second most watched series in the history of the show, which started in 2002.

I’m A Celebrity’s brand new spin-off The Daily Drop is AXED after only one season… with no replacement show lined up for the first time in the series’ 19-year history

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! won’t feature spin-off show Daily Drop, with ITV axing it after just one year.

The show aired on the ITV hub and was hosted by Vick Hope, who now presents a prime time weekday show on BBC Radio 1 with Jordan North, a contestant on last year’s I’m A Celeb.

But neither Vick nor Jordan will be involved this year, with ITV confirming that ‘the Daily Drop won’t be returning this year’.

A spokesperson for the show said: ‘We’d like to thank Vick Hope and everyone involved in the show last year for bringing fans of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! all the latest news and gossip.’

The show was a replacement for I’m A Celebrity: Extra Camp, which aired on ITV2 and was axed in 2020.

The axing of Extra Camp came as a shock to viewers, who had enjoyed it for 17 years, since the main show’s inception.

It’s most recent hosting line-up featured former contestants Adam Thomas, Joel Dommett and Emily Atack.

This marks the first time in I’m A Celeb’s 19-year tenure that a spin-off series isn’t scheduled to air.

The news comes as two veteran soap stars were rumoured to have signed up to compete on this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson – who plays Steve McDonald – and EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt – who portrays Ian Beale – have allegedly signed on for the show, set to air next month from Gwrych Castle in Abergel, Wales.

According to The Sun, ITV are hoping that Simon, 47, and Adam, 53, will ‘provide some real comedy moments together’.

Steve McDonald Vs Ian Beale! Coronation Street’s Simon Gregson [L] is reportedly set to compete against EastEnders soap rival Adam Woodyatt [R] on I’m A Celebrity 2021

‘To have both Simon and Adam on this series is a real coup. Bosses think they’ll provide some real comedy moments together,’ a source told the publication.

‘Bosses know Corrie fans will get right behind him. Everyone knows Simon as Steve but now they’ll get to see a completely different side of him for the first time.

‘Simon has previously shunned all reality shows and he has turned down I’m A Celeb a number of times before. But now his children are older, Simon started to think the timing was right.’

The show often features Corrie stars, with Simon’s on-screen mother Liz, played by Beverley Callard, taking part last year.

Mailonline has approached ITV representatives for comment.

The latest crop of contestants could be in for a rough first week as rain storms and 54mph winds threaten to batter the Welsh castle.

This year’s show has once again relocated from sunny Australia to Wales amid Covid restrictions, but long-range weather forecasts suggest that things will get off to a turbulent start.

Weather experts are predicting that the start of the show (tipped to be November 14th) will see half an inch of rain fall, while high winds will batter the castle.

According to The Sun, It’s also said that there will be 100% cloud cover, while temperature may struggle to get above zero degrees.

They add that the camp could be affected by heavy rainfall in the first two weeks.

It comes as I’m A Celebrity bosses are set to yet again enforce a two week quarantine for the contestants to make sure they do not suffer similar crisis to Strictly Come Dancing.

Producers are going to create a bubble for the famous faces which will attempt to avoid rows over vaccinations and keep them safe once in the camp at Gwrych Castle in Wales.

A show spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Like last year, our celebrities will do a two week quarantine with regular testing prior to entering the castle, and will then form a bubble for the duration of their time on the show.’

It comes after another primetime show fell into disarray when Strictly Come Dancing had difficulties at the start of the series.

Three professionals allegedly refused the Covid vaccination, while Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden tested positive for the disease – forcing them to miss an episode.

The year before, the show’s first same-sex couple Katya Jones and Nicola Adams were forced to withdraw from the competition after Katya contracted the virus.

Famous face: Rumoured to be in the line up for this year’s programme is broadcaster Richard Madeley

Last year, I’m A Celebrity required the celebrities to wear proximity monitors which flashed and buzzed when they came too close to one another.

Bosses also scaled down the production team, and had cameras set up already on-site so cameramen didn’t have to be on the set.

Also apparently set to join is journalist Richard Madeley who apparently signed a £200,000 contract with the reality show.

A source told The Sun: ‘He’s a favourite with ITV execs. He’s brilliant off and on screen so it seemed as good a time as any to throw caution to the wind and eat animal bits.’

Dame Arlene Phillips has reportedly signed up to take part in this year’s series.
