Australian music royalty have seemingly taken Covid lockdown fashion and the token phrase ‘more is more’ as their inspiration at the 2021 ARIA Awards – but a select few hit all the right notes in simple and elegant styles.

Celebrities posed up a storm before the ceremony was broadcast live on YouTube and Channel Nine from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, with no regular red carpet or physical audience as pandemic restrictions continue to disrupt the normal structure of major events.

Singer Amy Shark, who leads the nominations alongside hip hop newcomer Genesis Owusu with six each, arrived first in a tailored pair of black suit pants, a fuzzy bone-coloured cardigan buttoned up to the top of her chest and matching black nail polish.

While her Covid isolation-approved top knot would be rubber-stamped by all Australian residents who endured months of lockdown this year, it missed the mark in terms of event style, given this is the first substantial awards ceremony Down Under this year and she will be performing.

Siren Vera Blue (pictured left) appeared to borrow a 1920s pair of diamante-encrusted gloves from someone much older than her and a black tube top for the celebrity affair, pairing the look down with a fairy-inspired skirt that didn’t hit the right notes, while Peach PRC took her name rather literally in a sickly-sweet pink number (right)

Siren Vera Blue appeared to borrow a 1920s pair of diamante-encrusted gloves from someone much older than her and a black tube top for the celebrity affair, pairing the look down with a fairy-inspired skirt that didn’t hit the right notes.

It was a similar whimsical vibe on songwriter Peach PRC who donned an all-pink sickly-sweet skirt and matching glittery top to match her long tendrils. While it certainly fit her stage name it clashed with the red carpet beneath her and drowned her petite frame.

Hitmaker Vance Joy, who is up for five nominations, kept his look demure in a navy blue suit, white shirt and long grey tie with black formal shoes. It was a safe choice for the singer of Missing Piece – a song he is looking to win an award for tonight.

Mullets were on full display in the form of Cosmo Midnight and Lime Cordiale, with neither duo shying away from 70s-style suits to match their eclectic hairstyle.

Men weren’t the only ones wearing suits on the night of nights with singer KLP walking the red carpet with Matt Okine wearing a pyjamas-inspired black and silver sequin number.

While it was daring and weather appropriate given Sydney’s current La Nina weather system it was still far too boxy to turn sartorial heads.

Walking to a metallic beat: Matt Okine and KLP joined country singer Amber Lawrence (right) on the carpet with both ladies opting for silver outfits – one looking like she mistakenly ordered pyjamas for the event and the other resembling a member of the Spice Girls

Brooke Boney smiled bright with a pair of cream-coloured trousers that grazed the carpet, a silk white blouse and plenty of bling in the form of a diamante-encrusted belt and rings, with the Today Showbiz reporter presenting 16 ARIA Awards in the first part of the broadcast.

The Wiggles’ newest recruit Tsehay Hawkins, 16, was a standout star in her own right, rocking a metallic green dress to perfection with a silver choker and love heart earrings. She even managed to pull the signature ‘Wiggle fingers’ before she was ushered onwards.

Gretta Ray certainly made her presence known with a risqué black gown with tactical cut outs at her hips and across her chest but it was perfectly balanced with minimal jewellery and a Delta Goodrem-inspired blonde fringe and tousled hair-do.

Ms Ray is vying for the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist award after winning the national Triple J Unearthed radio competition for bands and songwriters in 2016 and catapulting herself into the spotlight.
